By using facial muscles repeatedly throughout our lifetime, the skin is creased in areas of greatest use. The ageing process causes the slow-down of collagen and Elastin production in the skin so as we get older these areas of over use become damaged and the lines become permanent. Anti wrinkle treatment reduces the movement of muscles in these areas and the skin stops being creased and is allowed to recover causing the lines to soften or even fade away.
The areas I will be offering treatment with Botulinum toxin are:
- frown lines (glabellar lines)
- areas around the eyes (crow’s feet)
- and horizontal forehead lines.
How does it work?
The area we decide to treat is injected intramuscular or intradermal with the diluted solution of the Botulinum Toxin. I am using only Botox and Vistabel, which are the commercial names of the medicines containing this toxin.
After injection, the Botulinum neurotoxin blocks the nerve endings that connect to the muscles, reducing their activity.
Only a qualified person like your dentist with the appropriate training should be administering these injections to avoid the possibility of some adverse effects such as bruising, swelling, headaches, eyelid ptosis, brow ptosis, brow repositioning and diplopia.
Circumstances under which patients should not use this treatment include:
The effectiveness depends on the frequency of use. Patients must bear in mind this is only a temporary treatment, the results start within 2 weeks of treatment and can last up to 3-6 months. Both men and women can benefit from this method of anti-aging treatment.
